FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The Village de Memramcook opposes the sale of the Memramcook Institute and proposes a private international bilingual school
(Memramcook, NB) – During a press conference held this morning at the Monument-Lefebvre National Historic Site in Memramcook, the Mayor for the Village de Memramcook, Michel Gaudet, accompanied by Mr. Bernard Cormier and Dr. Aurel Schofield, reputed businessmen who have worked on the realization of several notable projects, proudly presented an innovative and refreshing approach to learning intended for the former “Collège Saint-Joseph”.
First, the Mayor explains the milestones that prompted the municipality to set in motion today’s important announcement. The turning point was the recent news that the Provincial Government was considering selling the Memramcook Institute to the private sector.
The Mayor informed the audience that during a Municipal Council Meeting held last night, August 31st, it was unanimously motioned to oppose the sale of the heritage building by the provincial government to the private sector. He adds that the Village de Memramcook is asking the provincial government for the first right of refusal regarding the purchase of the property.
For several years, discussions and studies have been initiated in order to present a comprehensive proposal to the provincial government to revive the historic building that has served as a landmark for over 150 years. The envisioned development project includes a community center, the possibility of establishing a “Bibliothèque nationale de l’Acadie” and a private international bilingual school. The historic establishment would once again become the vibrant place it was for thousands who still reminisce over great memories shared.
Dr Aurel Schofield explains in detail the concept of a private international bilingual school in Memramcook - an ideal project to continue the educational mission of the former “Collège Saint-Joseph”, a heritage institution where several renowned people who shaped Acadian history studied. In development for more than a year now, the large-scale project which has received the support of renowned partners, such as IPSOS and EY, should be completed with a final decision in the first quarter of 2021.
The project which is modernized to fit the needs of the upcoming generation is the key to creating new venues by offering unique opportunities and a diversified range of services easily accessible to its population as well as to local and international students from both French and English linguistic communities. In addition, the project would generate economic prosperity for the young growing community while maintaining a captivating visibility for its tourism sector.
