L'odyssée acadienne du Cap-Breton - Acadians have had a continual presence in Cape Breton since 1713, but little is known about their history. This conference will focus on the different periods of Acadian settlement on the island. We will first discuss the period beginning with the founding of the colony of Île Royale in 1713, then the years preceding the British conquest in 1758 and finally the post-deportation period, when the Acadians s' appropriate part of the territory, transmitting a culture that remains very much alive today.

A doctor in ethnology from Laval University, Ronald Labelle was for a long time the head of the Ethnology and Folklore sector at the Center for Acadian Studies at the University of Moncton and was director of this center for four years. He held the McCain Research Chair in Acadian Ethnology at the University of Moncton from 2006 to 2012 and was ultimately Professor of French and Acadian Studies at Cape Breton University. A long-time contributor to Rabaska, a journal of ethnology in French America, he also directed the journal Forum d’histoire orale for several years. His publications include Chansons acadiennes de Pubnico et Grand-Étang (2008), The Acadians of Chezzetcook (1995), La vie acadienne à Chezzetcook (1991) and Au Village-du-Bois - Mémoires d'une communautaire acadienne, a work that won the 1986 Prix France-Acadie.
